Class 10Th English (Words And Expression 2) Chapter 8 The Sermom At Benares Alright children, today we are going to understand a very touching and meaningful story called “The Sermon at Benares.” I want you to imagine that you are listening to a story that teaches not only something for your exams, but also something for life. So sit comfortably and listen carefully. First, let us understand an important word: sermon. A sermon is a religious or moral talk given to teach people how to live a better life. It is usually given by a spiritual leader. It is different from a lecture because a lecture is mainly about giving information, like in a classroom. A sermon touches the heart and teaches values. Sometimes we even use the word “sermon” in a funny way, like when someone gives us too much advice. For example, if your mother keeps telling you to finish homework on time, you might jokingly say, “Please stop giving me a sermon!” Now, let us go back in time, more than 2500 years ago. Gautama Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha in northern India around 563 B.C. He lived a comfortable life as a prince. He had everything—wealth, a beautiful palace, a wife, and a son. But he was protected from the harsh realities of life. One day, when he went outside the palace, he saw four things that changed his life: a sick man, an old man, a dead body in a funeral procession, and a monk begging for alms. These sights made him realize that suffering, old age, and death are part of life. This realization disturbed him deeply. He left his palace and family to search for enlightenment, which means deep spiritual understanding. After wandering for years, he meditated under a peepal tree and finally attained enlightenment. That tree became known as the Bodhi Tree, and Siddhartha became known as the Buddha, meaning “The Enlightened One.” Now comes the main story that is often asked in exams. A woman named Kisa Gotami had only one son, and sadly, he died. She was heartbroken. Her grief was so deep that she refused to believe he was dead. She carried the child to her neighbours and begged for medicine to cure him. People thought she had lost her senses because the boy was already dead. Finally, someone told her to go to the Buddha. The most important learning points in this chapter are Meaning and significance of a sermon, Life of Gautama Buddha and his enlightenment, Kisa Gotami's grief and her quest for medicine, Buddha's lesson on the universality of death, Acceptance of suffering as a part of life and finding peace through it. Students should revise these points before attempting MCQs and long-answer questions.
