Now imagine that you are sitting in your classroom after a Mathematics test. Your teacher is holding a sheet of paper with everyone’s marks written on it. Some students scored 10, some 20, some 36, some 40, and so on, all the way up to 95. Now the teacher says, “Let us find out the average marks of the class.” And that is where our story begins. In Class IX, you already learned about ungrouped data. That means data where each value is listed separately. You also learned how to draw bar graphs, histograms, and frequency polygons. And you learned three very important measures called mean, median, and mode. These are called measures of central tendency because they tell us what value is at the center of the data. Now in this chapter, we are going one step ahead. We are learning how to find these measures not only for ungrouped data but also for grouped data. We will also learn something new called cumulative frequency and draw special curves called ogives. These are very common in board exams. Let us first understand the mean, which is also called the average. Suppose your teacher wants to know the average marks of the class. The basic idea of mean is simple. Add all the marks and divide by the total number of students. That is what you did in earlier classes. But now imagine that instead of writing every student’s marks separately, the teacher writes how many students got each mark. For example, one student got 10 marks, one got 20 marks, three got 36 marks, four got 40 marks, and so on. These numbers showing how many students got a particular mark are called frequencies. Here comes a very common exam question. “What is frequency?” Frequency means the number of times a particular observation occurs.
