You may still hear birds or feel the breeze, but you cannot see the beautiful colours anymore. That simple experience tells us something very important. Our eyes are one of the most precious sense organs we have. They allow us to see light, colours, shapes, and movement. Today, let us understand the story of the human eye in a simple and relatable way, so that when questions about the eye, vision, and defects appear in your exams, you will feel confident and ready. Think of the human eye like a small, living camera. Just like a camera has a lens that focuses light onto film or a sensor, the human eye also has a lens that focuses light onto a screen called the retina. The eyeball is almost spherical in shape, with a diameter of about 2.3 centimetres. Light enters the eye through a transparent curved surface at the front called the cornea. The cornea does most of the bending of light. In fact, most of the refraction happens at the cornea, not at the eye lens. This is a very common exam question. Many students think the lens does all the work, but the cornea plays a major role. Behind the cornea is a dark circular structure called the iris. The iris controls the size of the pupil, which is the small opening through which light enters. In bright light, the pupil becomes smaller to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. In dim light, it becomes larger to allow more light in. This automatic control helps protect our eyes and improve vision. Now imagine light rays coming from an object, say a candle. These rays enter the eye through the cornea, pass through the pupil, then through the eye lens, and finally reach the retina. The eye lens forms a real and inverted image on the retina.
