But today, the teacher asks a new question, one that often appears in exams: “What makes the electric charges move in the first place?” Aarav thinks for a moment. If current is the flow of charge, then something must push these charges to move. But what is that push? To understand this, the teacher gives a simple example. Imagine a water tank kept on the terrace of your house. The water in the tank is at a higher level. When you open the tap downstairs, water flows out. Why? Because there is a difference in height. Water naturally flows from higher level to lower level due to pressure difference. But if the pipe is kept completely flat and both ends are at the same level, water will not flow on its own. In the same way, electric charges do not flow in a wire unless there is something like an electric pressure pushing them. This electric pressure is called potential difference. Now here comes a very important exam question: “What is electric potential difference?” The simple answer is this: The electric potential difference between two points is the work done to move a unit charge from one point to another. In easier words, it tells us how much energy is given to each unit of charge so that it can move through the circuit. Scientists write this as a formula: V equals W divided by Q. Here, V is potential difference, W is work done, and Q is charge. So potential difference is equal to work done divided by charge. If more work is done on each coulomb of charge, the potential difference is higher. If less work is done, the potential difference is lower.
