Detailed chapter summary

Imagine waking up in a world without print—no textbooks, newspapers, or even currency notes. This is the intriguing scenario explored in the Class 10 Social Science chapter "Everyday Life, Culture and Politics." The chapter traces the fascinating journey of print technology from ancient East Asia to Europe and then India, showing how print shaped education, culture, politics, and social reforms. Through stories of woodblock printing in China, Gutenberg's press in Europe, and the rise of newspapers in colonial India, this chapter reveals how print transformed societies. Harshali Academy offers an engaging audio lesson on "Everyday Life, Culture and Politics" that helps students grasp these concepts clearly. Listening to this chapter on Harshali Academy will deepen your understanding of how print influenced everyday life and political movements. Class 10Th Social Science (India and the contemporary world – II) Chapter 5 EVERYDAY LIFE, CULTURE AND POLITICS Close your eyes for a moment and imagine waking up tomorrow in a world without print. No textbooks. No newspapers. No comic books. No exam question papers. No posters. No currency notes. No labels on your food packets. It sounds almost impossible, doesn’t it? That is because we live in a world completely shaped by print. But it was not always like this. And understanding how print culture developed is one of the most important topics for your exams. Let us begin our story in East Asia, long before Europe even thought about printing presses. The earliest print technology was developed in China, Japan, and Korea. Around AD 594, the Chinese began printing by rubbing paper against inked wooden blocks. This method is called woodblock printing. Each page had to be carved carefully on a wooden block. Imagine the patience required. Skilled craftsmen copied beautiful calligraphy with great accuracy. Now here comes a very common exam question: Where did print technology first develop? The answer is East Asia, especially China. And what kind of printing was first used? Woodblock printing. In China, the imperial government played a major role in printing. China had a large bureaucracy, and people were selected through civil service examinations. To prepare for these exams, thousands of copies of textbooks were printed. So printing first grew because the government needed books for education and administration. This shows how technology and government needs can shape history. By the seventeenth century, something interesting happened. Printing was no longer limited to officials. As cities grew and trade expanded, merchants began using printed materials for business information. Reading slowly became a leisure activity. People began reading stories, poetry, plays, and novels. Even women from wealthy families started reading and writing. Some even published their poetry. This shows how print changed social life and gave new groups of people a voice. Later, in the nineteenth century, Western mechanical printing presses came to China. The most important learning points in this chapter are Origin of print technology in East Asia with woodblock printing, Role of printing in Chinese bureaucracy and education, Spread of print culture beyond officials to merchants and leisure reading, Gutenberg's invention of the movable type printing press in Europe, Impact of print on the Protestant Reformation and Scientific Revolution in Europe. Students should revise these points before attempting MCQs and long-answer questions.
