Dive into Class 10th Social Science Chapter 6 Manufacturing Industries with Harshali Academy for a clear understanding and exam success. Class 10Th Social Science (Contemporary India) CHAPTER 6 Manufacturing industries Close your eyes and imagine the bright evening of Diwali. The market is glowing with lights. Shops are full of colorful clothes, shiny utensils, sweets, shoes, toys, electric lights and beautiful diyas. A boy named Harish walks through the crowded market holding his parents’ hands. He looks around in wonder and asks, “Papa, how are so many things made? Who makes all these items?” His father smiles and says, “That is because of industries.” And that is where our story of manufacturing begins. Let us first understand a very important exam definition. Production of goods in large quantities after processing raw materials into more valuable products is called manufacturing. This is a very common question in exams: What is manufacturing? So remember, raw materials are changed into finished goods. For example, paper is made from wood, sugar is made from sugarcane, iron and steel are made from iron ore, and aluminium is made from bauxite. Even the shirt Harish buys is made from cotton yarn, which itself is produced in factories. Now Harish’s father explains that there are different types of industries. Some goods like shoes and clothes are produced in large factories using machines. These are large-scale industries. Some utensils are made in small workshops, which are small-scale industries. And diyas are made by individual potters at home. These are called household or cottage industries. So if the exam asks, “Name the types of industries based on size,” you can answer large-scale, small-scale and cottage industries. Now let us understand which sector manufacturing belongs to. In economics, we divide activities into primary, secondary and tertiary sectors. Primary activities include farming, fishing and mining. Secondary activities include manufacturing, where raw materials are processed into finished goods. Tertiary activities include services like banking, transport and teaching. So if the question comes, “In which sector do manufacturing industries fall?” the answer is the secondary sector. Harish then asks, “Why are manufacturing industries so important?” This is a very important long-answer question. Manufacturing is considered the backbone of economic development. First, it helps in modernising agriculture. For example, factories produce tractors, irrigation pumps, fertilisers, insecticides and machines that farmers use. The most important learning points in this chapter are Manufacturing is the production of goods in large quantities by processing raw materials into finished products., Types of industries based on size: large-scale, small-scale, and cottage industries., Manufacturing industries belong to the secondary sector of the economy., Importance of manufacturing: modernizes agriculture, reduces unemployment and poverty, increases exports., Relationship between agriculture and industry: agro-based industries depend on agricultural raw materials and provide tools to farmers, supporting each other’s growth.. Students should revise these points before attempting MCQs and long-answer questions.
