It feels harder to ride!” Sonali laughs and replies, “That’s because we are riding against the wind. The wind is applying a force opposite to our motion.” This is the first important idea in this chapter: force. In science, a force is simply a push or a pull that can change the motion of an object. When Sonali and Ragini pedal their bicycles, they apply a force with their legs on the pedals. This force turns the wheels and moves the bicycle forward. But sometimes other forces act against them.
