Class 9Th English (Moments Supplementary Reader) Chapter 5 The Happy Prince Imagine a teacher sitting with students during story time before exams. The teacher begins speaking slowly so that everyone can imagine the scene clearly. The teacher says, “Children, today we will begin a beautiful story called The Happy Prince. While we listen to the story, we will also understand some important ideas that can help you answer questions in your exams.” High above a busy city, on top of a tall stone column, stood a magnificent statue. This statue was called The Happy Prince. The statue was very beautiful. It was covered all over with thin sheets of shining gold. His eyes were made of two bright blue sapphires, and on the handle of his sword there was a large red ruby that glowed brightly in the sunlight. Whenever people in the city looked up at the statue, they admired its beauty. Some said, “He is as beautiful as a weathercock.” Others said, “The statue is very artistic.” The town councillor even said this to show that he understood art, though he really did not understand it very well. But although everyone admired the statue’s beauty, very few people understood the deeper story behind it. One night, a little swallow flew over the city. A swallow is a small bird that travels long distances during different seasons. His friends had already flown away to Egypt six weeks earlier because swallows usually migrate there during winter. But this little swallow had stayed behind because he had fallen in love with a beautiful reed by the river. However, after some time he realized that the reed could not travel with him. So finally he decided to fly to Egypt to join his friends. After flying all day, the swallow arrived in the city at night. He was tired and needed a place to sleep. He looked around and suddenly saw the tall statue of the Happy Prince. “This looks like a wonderful place to stay,” he said to himself. “It is high above the city and the air is fresh.” So the swallow settled between the feet of the statue. He felt quite comfortable. “I have found a golden bedroom,” he said happily as he prepared to sleep. But just as he tucked his head under his wing, a drop of water fell on him. The swallow looked up in surprise. “What a strange thing!” he said.
