Listening to the full chapter on Harshali Academy enriches understanding and empathy. Class 9Th English (Moments Supplementary Reader) Chapter 9 The Beggar Imagine a teacher speaking to students during story revision in class. The teacher says calmly, “Children, today we will begin a very interesting and meaningful story called ‘The Beggar’ by Anton Chekhov. This story teaches us about honesty, dignity of labour, and how kindness can change a person’s life. Listen carefully and imagine the scenes like a movie so that you can easily remember them for your exams.” The story begins on a street where a beggar named Lushkoff approaches a man named Sergei, who is an advocate or lawyer. Lushkoff looks miserable. His clothes are torn and dirty, and he appears weak and hungry. He pleads in a pitiful voice, asking Sergei for help. He says something like this: “Kind sir, please have pity on me. I am hungry. I have not eaten for three days. I do not even have a few coins to pay for a place to sleep.” To make his story sound more convincing, he tells Sergei that he used to be a village schoolteacher for eight years but lost his job because of false accusations and unfair treatment. He also says that he has been unemployed for a year and now has a job offer in another town called Kaluga, but he has no money to travel there. Now imagine how Sergei feels while listening to this story. At first Sergei looks carefully at the beggar’s ragged coat, tired eyes, and red cheeks, which show that the man might be addicted to alcohol. Suddenly Sergei remembers something. He thinks he has seen this man before. And then he recalls exactly where. Just two days earlier, he had met the same man in another street, but at that time the beggar had told a completely different story. Instead of being a schoolteacher, he had claimed to be a student who had been expelled from school. This immediately makes Sergei suspicious. So Sergei asks him, “Didn’t you tell me earlier that you were a student who had been expelled?” The beggar becomes nervous and confused. At first he tries to continue lying and insists that he is indeed a schoolteacher and even offers to show some papers. But Sergei becomes angry. He realises that the beggar has been telling lies just to gain sympathy and money. Sergei scolds him sharply. The most important learning points in this chapter are Lushkoff’s character and his deceptive stories, Sergei’s role as a lawyer and his reaction to the beggar, Themes of honesty and dignity of labour, Social issues like poverty and addiction, Transformation through kindness and opportunity. Students should revise these points before attempting MCQs and long-answer questions.
