Muskan’s teacher had asked the class to observe how the weight of an object appears different in different liquids. So Muskan took a small metallic ball and a spring balance. First, she measured the weight of the ball in air. The spring balance showed a certain reading. Then she slowly dipped the ball into a container filled with water and checked the reading again. Surprisingly, the reading became less. After that, she repeated the experiment using mustard oil. The reading was again different. Muskan carefully wrote all the observations in her notebook. She noticed that the weight of the ball appeared least in water and slightly more in mustard oil, while the highest reading was in air. Muskan became curious and asked herself, “Why does the weight change in different liquids?” When an object is placed in a liquid, the liquid pushes the object upward with a force called buoyant force or upthrust. Because of this upward push, the object appears lighter in liquids. Water gives a stronger upward push than mustard oil, so the ball appeared lightest in water. This is a common science concept that students often learn in school. Teachers may ask questions like: why does an object appear lighter in water? Or explain why the weight of a body changes in different media. The simple answer is that liquids exert an upward force that reduces the apparent weight of objects. Now Muskan thought of something interesting. Instead of only writing the experiment in her notebook, she decided to record a video while performing the experiment. In the video, she explained each step: measuring the weight in air, dipping the ball in water, then in mustard oil, and finally comparing the readings. This made her explanation very clear and easy to understand.
