Of course not. There may be many houses on Street 2. And if someone only told you “House number 5,” that would also not help, because every street may have a house numbered 5. So what do you really need? You need two pieces of information. First, which street. Second, which house on that street. This simple idea is actually the beginning of a very important chapter in mathematics. It teaches us how to locate points using two reference lines. In earlier classes, you learned how to locate a point on a number line. That was easy because you needed only one number. For example, if I say 3 on the number line, you go three units to the right of zero. If I say minus 4, you go four units to the left.
