Long ago, around 500 BC in India, a wise philosopher named Maharishi Kanad was also thinking about this same question. He believed that if we keep dividing matter, which he called “padarth,” we will eventually reach the smallest particle that cannot be divided any further. He named this smallest particle “Parmanu.” Now imagine how amazing that idea was. There were no microscopes, no laboratories, no modern science tools. It was just deep thinking and observation. Around the same time in Greece, philosophers named Democritus and Leucippus had similar thoughts. Democritus called these smallest particles “atoms,” which means “indivisible.” Isn’t it surprising that thinkers from different parts of the world had similar ideas? Now here is a very important exam question that teachers love to ask: “Who gave the concept of the smallest particle of matter in India and what was it called?” The answer is Maharishi Kanad, and he called it Parmanu.
