Or rubbed a balloon on your sweater and seen it stick to the wall? You might have laughed, but this simple trick gave scientists an important clue. When we rub two objects together, they become electrically charged. But where does this charge come from? It comes from tiny particles inside atoms. This means atoms are divisible. They contain even smaller particles called subatomic particles. In the late 1800s, scientists were very curious about electricity passing through gases. J.J. Thomson performed experiments using cathode ray tubes and discovered a tiny negatively charged particle. He called it the electron. This was a huge discovery.
