As he looks carefully, he notices something surprising. The cork does not look solid. Instead, it looks like a honeycomb, full of tiny little boxes arranged side by side. Hooke is amazed. He calls these tiny boxes “cells,” which in Latin means “little rooms.” That small observation became one of the most important discoveries in the history of biology. Now imagine your teacher asking in the exam, “Who discovered the cell and how?” You should remember this story.
