Finally, the river drains into a large water body like a lake, sea, or ocean. The area that is drained by a single river and its tributaries is called a drainage basin. For example, all the land from which water flows into the Ganga River forms the Ganga drainage basin. A very common exam question is: What is a drainage basin? So remember this simple idea—it's the area drained by a river and its tributaries. Now imagine two rivers flowing on opposite sides of a small hill. The hill separates the water flowing into two different rivers. This elevated land that separates two drainage basins is called a water divide.
