Your teacher says, “All these answers are hidden in one word — climate.” And that is where our story begins. In the last chapters, you learned about landforms and rivers. Now we are going to understand the third important part of the natural environment — the atmosphere. The atmosphere decides whether we wear woollens or cotton, whether we carry an umbrella or sunglasses. First, let us understand two very important terms that are almost always asked in exams: weather and climate. Weather refers to the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place at a particular time. For example, if it is raining today, that is today’s weather. Climate, on the other hand, is the average weather condition of a place over a long period of time, usually more than thirty years. So if someone asks in the exam, “What is the difference between weather and climate?” you can say weather is short-term, climate is long-term. The elements of weather and climate are the same. They include temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind, humidity, and precipitation. These are important words, and examiners like to test definitions. Temperature tells us how hot or cold it is. Humidity tells us how much moisture is in the air. Precipitation means rain, snow, sleet, or hail. Now let us talk about India’s climate. India has a monsoon type of climate. The word monsoon comes from the Arabic word “mausim,” which means season. Monsoon refers to the seasonal reversal of winds.
