Today, let us understand this concept in a simple story format so that if it appears in your exam, you can answer confidently and clearly. Food is as essential for living as air is for breathing. But food security does not simply mean eating two meals a day. It has three important dimensions. First is availability. This means enough food is produced within the country or imported if needed, and there are buffer stocks stored in government warehouses. For example, India stores food grains in Food Corporation of India godowns. These stored grains help during emergencies. Second is accessibility. This means food must be within reach of every person. Even if there is plenty of food in the country, if a poor person cannot reach it because of distance, social barriers, or lack of distribution systems, food security is not achieved. Third is affordability. This means people must have enough income to buy sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. If prices rise sharply and wages do not increase, poor families cannot afford food. So, here is a very common exam question: What are the dimensions of food security? The answer is availability, accessibility and affordability. If any one of these fails, food security is disturbed. Now let us understand why food security is so important. Imagine a natural disaster like drought. When rainfall fails, crops do not grow properly. Food production decreases.
