This chapter explores how these communities move seasonally with their animals in search of pasture and water, their economic importance, and the challenges they faced during colonial times. Harshali Academy brings this fascinating chapter to life, helping students understand the lifestyle of pastoralists and their continuing relevance today. Listen to the full chapter on Harshali Academy to grasp these concepts deeply and prepare effectively for your exams. Class 9Th Social Science (India and the Contemporary World-I) Chapter 5 Pastoralits In the Mordern world Close your eyes and imagine you are travelling on a highway early in the morning. On one side of the road, you see a long line of sheep walking slowly. Behind them, a man in a turban holds a stick. A woman carries a bundle on her head. A child runs beside a few goats. They are not lost. They are not wandering without purpose. They are nomadic pastoralists, people who move from place to place with their animals to earn their living. Today, we are going to understand their story in a simple and interesting way so that you can easily remember it for your exams. First, let us understand a very basic question that often comes in exams: Who are nomadic pastoralists? Nomads are people who do not live permanently in one place. Pastoralists are people who depend on animals like sheep, goats, camels, cattle or yaks for their livelihood. So nomadic pastoralists are people who move from one place to another with their herds in search of pasture and water. Now you may wonder, why do they move? Why not just settle in one place like farmers? The answer is simple. Animals need fresh grass and water. In many parts of India, especially in mountains, deserts and dry plains, grass grows only in certain seasons. For example, in the Himalayas, Gujjar Bakarwals move to higher mountains in summer because the snow melts and fresh grass grows. In winter, they move down to the plains because the mountains become too cold and covered with snow. This movement according to seasons is called seasonal migration. This is a very important exam term. In Rajasthan, Raikas or Rabaris rear camels and sheep. They move across dry regions in search of grazing land. In Maharashtra, the Dhangars move between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau. In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, the Kurumas and Gollas rear sheep and cattle. Each group has its own pattern of movement depending on climate and geography. Now here is a very common exam question: Why is pastoralism important? The most important learning points in this chapter are Definition of nomadic pastoralists and their lifestyle, Seasonal migration and reasons for movement, Economic importance of pastoralism (milk, wool, meat, leather), Impact of British colonial rule on pastoralists (forest laws, land restrictions), Criminal Tribes Act and its effects on nomadic groups in India and Africa (Maasai)  and their adaptation strategies. Students should revise these points before attempting MCQs and long-answer questions.
