About Virendra
Virendra Kushwah is the founder and CEO of Harshali Academy, a story-based audio learning platform that has become the go-to NCERT resource for Class 5-10 students across India. His journey from banking professional to edtech entrepreneur is a story of recognizing a systemic problem in Indian education and having the courage to do something about it.
Born and raised in Madhya Pradesh, Virendra built a distinguished nineteen-year career in the Indian banking sector. He developed deep expertise in financial analysis, customer relationship management, and institutional processes — skills that would later prove invaluable in building a scalable educational platform. He was known as a meticulous professional who could communicate complex financial concepts to clients in clear, accessible language. This communication skill — the ability to simplify the complex — would become the cornerstone of Harshali Academy's teaching philosophy.
The turning point came at home, watching his daughter struggle with NCERT chapters that were well-designed but poorly taught in conventional formats. Virendra noticed that when he sat with her and retold the chapter as a story — explaining the context, the characters, the reasons behind events — she understood and retained the material immediately. The same content that had confused her for three readings became clear in one hearing.
"It was not that she was a slow learner," Virendra says. "It was that she was a human learner. Humans have always learned through stories — from the Mahabharata to the Panchatantra to the Jataka tales. Our entire civilization has transmitted knowledge through narrative. Why should NCERT chapters be any different?"
19 Years in Banking → EdTech Entrepreneur
Leaving a stable, well-paying banking career is not a decision made lightly — particularly in India, where financial security carries enormous personal and family weight. Virendra spent months deliberating before making the leap. He researched edtech markets, studied successful educational platforms globally, analyzed the specific gaps in India's Class 5-10 learning ecosystem, and built detailed financial projections.
What he found was striking: despite India having over 250 million school students, the quality audio learning market for NCERT curriculum was essentially empty. There were video platforms, there were coaching institutes, there were printed guides — but there was no platform that systematically delivered every NCERT chapter as an engaging audio story, in both Hindi and English, accessible on a basic Android phone.
"My banking training taught me to identify underserved markets," Virendra explains. "The underserved market here was 100 million students who needed quality NCERT explanation but couldn't access it because of geography, cost, or learning format. Audio removes all three barriers simultaneously."
With Mamta ji's partnership and support — she became co-founder and manages operations and content quality — Virendra launched Harshali Academy. The name "Harshali" reflects their personal connection to the project: it is the name of their daughter, the student whose learning struggle sparked the entire venture.
His banking background brought unexpected advantages to the edtech space: financial discipline in product development, systematic process thinking in content creation, and a rigorous metrics-oriented approach to measuring learning outcomes. Simultaneously, he compensated for areas outside his expertise by studying instructional design, content pedagogy, and digital product development intensively. He built the platform's technology infrastructure himself, learning Next.js, Supabase, and audio pipeline engineering in the process.
Philosophy on Story-Based Learning
Virendra's educational philosophy is both simple and radical in the context of Indian schooling: every concept can be taught as a story, and concepts taught as stories are better understood and better retained than concepts taught as facts.
"When I tell you that photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert sunlight to glucose using chlorophyll and CO₂," Virendra says, "you understand the definition. But if I tell you: imagine a leaf is a tiny solar-powered kitchen. The chef is chlorophyll. The ingredients coming in are sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide from the air. What comes out of the kitchen is glucose — food for the plant — and oxygen, which the plant gives back to us as a gift. Now you don't just know the definition; you understand what's actually happening. And you'll remember it years later."
This approach — grounding abstract concepts in concrete, memorable imagery and narrative — is what differentiates every Harshali Academy audio chapter from a simple reading of the textbook. Every script is written to create understanding, not just exposure.
Virendra also believes strongly in the importance of language accessibility. "India is linguistically diverse. A student who learns better in Hindi should not be disadvantaged compared to one who learns in English. Both deserve the same quality of explanation. That is why every chapter on Harshali Academy is available in both Hindi and English — not as a translation, but as a fresh explanation designed for that language's natural expression."

Other Ventures
Alongside Harshali Academy, Virendra is involved in several other entrepreneurial initiatives. Neetfly is a preparation platform focused on NEET aspirants. Practico is an exam practice tool for competitive examination preparation. These ventures reflect his broader vision of making quality educational resources accessible to Indian students at every level — from Class 5 through competitive exam preparation.
Each venture is built on the same foundational belief: that geography and economic background should not determine the quality of education a student receives. Technology, when designed thoughtfully, can bridge this gap.
Vision for Indian Education
"India has one of the world's youngest and largest student populations. The quality of education these students receive today will determine the country's economic and social trajectory for the next fifty years. We cannot afford a system where quality learning is available only to those who live in urban areas or can afford expensive coaching."
Virendra's vision is to make Harshali Academy the default NCERT learning companion for every Class 5-10 student in India — regardless of where they live, what language they speak, or what their family can afford. The goal is not merely to build a profitable edtech company, but to meaningfully improve learning outcomes for millions of Indian students within the next five years.
